Breast Lift (Mastopexy) Atlanta

Thinking about getting a breast lift in Atlanta area?

Breast Lift

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to lift and reshape breast tissue. Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. A breast lift can restore the shape of your bust line, enhancing your appearance and self-confidence.
A  woman’s breasts can deflate, lose firmness, and sag over time due to gravity, pregnancy, and weight fluctuations, a condition known as breast ptosis. To reverse these changes, Dr. Okoro can tighten the breast skin and reposition the breast tissue, providing a more youthful shape with improved nipple position. Dr. Okoro can also reduce the areola diameter, as desired. In some cases, breast implants are used in conjunction with mastopexy to increase firmness and breast size, and contour.

Why choose a breast lift?

As women age and/or have children, their breasts tend to lose fat and the breast tissue begins to thin. In most cases, when the breast tissue shrinks, the skin does not and the areola/nipple droops downward. Lifting the breast and nipple above the crease will restore a youthful look. Most patients  will enjoy a new, more pleasing shape, with more comfortable breasts that are in better proportion to your physique.

Will a breast lift affect nursing?

While it is possible to nurse after a breast lift, it is generally recommended that you wait after nursing. Should you become pregnant your breasts will swell and stretch the skin and you may lose the benefits of the procedure.

Can a breast lift be combined with another procedure?

Yes. Many patients who request a breast lift also want to have the fullness back. These patients usually decide to have implants as well. In certain instances, the augmentation will aid in stretching the skin, enabling your surgeon to do a breast lift with shorter scars. In fact, although mastopexy alone can provide many years of renewal, the addition of breast implants to the procedure usually ensures a very long-lasting result. Other patients may require a breast reduction as well as a breast lift to restore the look they desire.

How is a breast lift performed?

Breast lifts are performed on an outpatient basis using a general or local anesthesia at an accredited office-based surgical center, outpatient ambulatory surgical center or a hospital.  During your consultation, Dr. Okoro will review with you the various options available for breast lift surgery. In general, the more dramatic the proposed changes to the breasts become, the more invasive the mastopexy procedure becomes. The least invasive breast lift involves making circular incisions around the areola, removing excess skin, elevating the nipple position, and closing the wound around the pigmented areola.

This is often called the “concentric ring” or “doughnut” mastopexy. A more invasive technique includes this concentric ring design, but also adds a vertical incision downward from the areola to allow more breast tissue repositioning. This design is often called the “circumvertical” or “lollipop” mastopexy. The most invasive technique for breast lifting resembles breast reduction incisions except that little or no breast tissue is removed; instead, only skin is removed and the breast tissue itself is dramatically repositioned. In this case, scars encircle the areola, extend vertically downward, and continue horizontally in the crease under the breast.

This technique is often called the “anchor” mastopexy, due to the incision pattern. Dr. Okoro prefers the “doughnut” and “lollipop” breast lift depending on your needs. He will make every effort to minimize scar length during mastopexy surgery. All of these mastopexy techniques allow for the addition of breast augmentation, either simultaneously or at a later date.  A breast lift may take 2 hours depending on the complexity.

Which breast lift procedure is best for me?

After examining the size, shape, and sagging of your breasts and the size of your areolas, Dr Okoro will discuss the technique best suited for your procedure. He will choose from a variety of surgical approaches to get you the best result.

What about scarring after a breast lift?

The size and amount of scarring is different for every patient. However, the use of silicone sheathing, topical liquid silicone, and other treatments can greatly diminish the appearance of scars. Dr Okoro will discuss the best option with you during your confidential consultation.

What is breast lift surgery recovery like?

Following breast lift, as with any breast surgery, you will be asked to wear a surgical bra that will serve a a bandage providing protection and support. Most discomfort associated with breast surgery can be controlled with pain medication. Antibiotics may also be prescribed. Almost all women experience some degree of swelling, bruising and tenderness. These symptoms should subside in a short time.  All sutures will dissolve within 1 – 2 weeks. Dr Okoro will advise you on a proper schedule for returning to your normal activities. Most patients are back to work within the first week. We instruct all breast lift patients to wear surgical or sports bras and to avoid strenuous upper body activity for several weeks. Patients may drive and return to work once they discontinue narcotic pain medicine.

How much will breast lift surgery cost?

Cost is always a consideration in elective surgery. The fees for breast lift procedures can vary widely. A surgeon’s cost for breast lift may vary based on his or her experience as well as geographic location. We offer patient financing plans. The total cost includes:

  • surgeon’s fee
  • hospital or surgical facility costs
  • anesthesia fees
  • post-surgery garments

Most health insurance plans will not cover cosmetic breast lift surgery, related complications or another surgery to revise the appearance of your breasts. However, some insurance will cover breast lift related to breast reconstruction. You must carefully review your health insurance policy.

To determine if you are a good candidate for breast lift surgery, Dr. Okoro will review your health history and perform an examination during your consultation. We will also take preoperative photos during your visit. You may be required to have a mammogram before your surgery, depending on your age and last study. During the consultation, Dr. Okoro will understand your goals and desires and he will review available options and techniques.  For more information about breast lift surgery or to schedule a confidential consultation at our plastic surgery practice, call 770-485-1554 or email us at info@georgiaplastic.com.
