During the natural aging process, some of the earliest and most visible signs happen around the eyes. Excess or sagging skin in the upper and lower eyelids can make you appear older than you really are and create a tired, worn out look.
At Georgia Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, our eyelid procedure will improve the skin around your eyelids and create a look that is refreshed and alert. Contact us today at our Atlanta and Marietta locations to schedule a consultation.
What is Eyelid Surgery?
Commonly referred to as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper and lower eyelids or both. Eyelid surgery can correct several common cosmetic eyelid concerns, including:
- Extra skin in the upper eyelids
- Disappearance of the upper eyelid crease, caused by excess skin
- Eyes that appear tired or sad
- Impaired peripheral vision due to extra skin
- Wrinkles around the eyes
- A puffy appearance in the lower eyelids
- Loose or drooping lower eyelids
- Hollows underneath the eyes
During eyelid surgery, eyelid shape and contour are restored by removing excess skin, fat and sometimes muscle. This is an outpatient procedure that is typically performed under local anesthesia, but general anesthesia is available. Incisions are placed in the eyelid crease to eliminate visible scarring, and the sutures will dissolve by themselves over time.
Eyelid surgery can be performed in conjunction with other procedures, which can be discussed during your consultation.
Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
During your consultation, your overall health and medical history will be evaluated. Conditions such as dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, high blood pressure, and thyroid abnormalities may require a more thorough discussion. Your brow position, skin laxity, fat deposits and eyelid tone and position will be examined, and your cosmetic goals and expectations will be discussed to determine whether eyelid surgery is right for you.
What are the Results Like?
Typical results after this procedure are eyelids that appear more alert, well-rested and younger. You will be asked to bring photos of your younger self with you to your initial visit in order to create realistic, natural results. Your reshaped eyelids will last for years, but will still be affected by the aging process as you get older.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Some swelling will occur after surgery, which will subside after a week or two. Eyelid surgery corrects cosmetic eye concerns but will not drastically change the shape of your eye, and risk of eye damage is minimal. Incisions are small and will heal quickly with very minimal scarring. Other risks and side effects will be discussed with you prior to surgery.
