How to Reclaim Your Post-Pregnancy Body With a Mommy Makeover

Going through a pregnancy can take a toll on your body, often leaving you with excess skin, fat that is hard to get rid of, and sagging breasts. At Georgia Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Atlanta, GA, we offer mommy makeover surgery to help you feel and look great.

What is a mommy makeover? Learn more about the procedure and how it can help you reclaim your post-pregnancy body.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a term for a series of cosmetic surgery procedures that can help you tweak areas of your body that you are struggling with following a pregnancy. A mommy makeover surgery can include the following:

  • Tummy tuck
  • Breast enhancement
  • Liposuction
  • Brazilian buttock lift (BBL)

The best candidates for a mommy makeover are those who are in good overall health, who are not planning on getting pregnant, who are not nursing, and who have time to recover.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from your abdomen. It can also help tighten abdominal muscles that may have weakened during your pregnancy.

Because it can strengthen these muscles, a tummy tuck not only offers a firmer abdomen but can also help your core. Your spine will have added support, letting you enjoy better posture and even helping with the incontinence issues that are common after childbirth.

Breast Enhancement

Your breasts can also change in shape and size after pregnancy. If your breasts have lost some volume, you can turn to a breast augmentation procedure. During this surgery, we insert implants that can help you regain that volume while also adjusting any shape or symmetry issues.

If you notice that your breasts are droopier than they used to be, a breast lift can be a good addition to a breast augmentation procedure. A breast lift removes extra skin and tightens breast tissue, providing your breasts with a more youthful appearance.

Perhaps your breasts are larger than they were before your pregnancy, and they cause you discomfort — or maybe you just don’t like their new size. In such instances, breast reduction procedures can also be part of a mommy makeover.

Liposuction

Some fat is hard to get rid of, no matter how much you exercise and diet. If you have stubborn fat pockets, liposuction can help you. Liposuction is the surgical removal of fat from areas like your abdomen, thighs, and buttocks.

Brazilian Buttock Lift

A BBL is a procedure that transfers fat from areas like your abdomen and thighs to your buttocks, providing you with a fuller look. The procedure begins with liposuction and then with the injection of that fat. More women today are getting a mommy makeover with BBL.

Preparing for a Mommy Makeover

If you want to get a mommy makeover, the first step is to schedule a consultation with us. We will assess the areas you would like to get treatment for so that we can make the best recommendations on procedures. In turn, you will tell us about your medical history, any previous cosmetic procedures, and any medications you take.

For a mommy makeover, you will need to do some blood work, as well as get a physical with your GP, to ensure you are healthy enough for surgery. If you are a good candidate for a mommy makeover, we will talk through the procedures we offer so that you can find what suits you best.

In the weeks leading up to surgery, you will need to make some lifestyle changes to help you prepare. These can include:

  • Stopping smoking
  • Avoiding blood-thinning medications and supplements
  • Avoiding alcohol

You will also want to make arrangements for childcare needs since you will not be able to lift anything heavy until you recover. And because you will receive general anesthesia, you must arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery.

Day of the Surgery

You want to stop drinking or eating anything by midnight on the night before your surgery. Come to our center in comfortable clothing and without wearing makeup or jewelry. We will begin by giving you the anesthesia before commencing your surgeries.

The exact process will depend on the treatments you want to receive. If you want a mommy makeover with BBL, for example, we can use the fat we remove during the liposuction stage of the makeover and inject it into your buttocks. After we finish the mommy makeover, we will take you to a recovery room to monitor you for about an hour.

Mommy Makeover Results

It is important to have someone stay with you for the first 24 hours after the procedure. You will also need someone to bring you to your post-op appointments.

You need to rest as you recover, but you can walk around a bit each day. If you have a tummy tuck, you may need to remain bent at the waist for the first two weeks, and you will likely also have to wear compression garments. Also, avoid lifting anything heavy for at least a few weeks, and make sure to sleep on your side or back.

As you come for follow-up appointments, we can offer guidance as to what activities you can begin doing again, including when you can drive and return to work. For most people, the mommy makeover results can start becoming visible around six weeks or so after surgery.
